Meet the experienced and friendly dentists and staff who make Mark R. Laurin, DDS Inc. the leading provider of oral hygiene and personalized dental services in Anchorage.

Meet our Associate Dentist, Dr. James Hyer, DMD

Dr. James Hyer DMD has considered himself an Alaskan since 1989, upon his first arrival here while serving in the army as a dentist. He was born and raised in Eugene, Oregon and went to undergraduate at the University of Oregon. Dr. Hyer graduated dental school at Oregon Health Sciences in Portland, Oregon in 1985. He spent many years mentoring athletes while coaching high school football in Anchorage, and is the proud father of a daughter currently attending college out of state.

Throughout his 30+ years as a practicing dentist, Dr. Hyer enjoys the many outdoor activities this wonderful state has to offer and has actually learned to fish! He is enthusiastic about ALL things dental, loves to be amongst people, is a kindhearted, caring man who considers himself fortunate to be working with a cast (staff) of all-stars! Dr. Hyer’s main focus is to provide comprehensive and comfortable dentistry for each and every patient that he is privileged to encounter. In spite of his accomplishments, he has remained humble and compassionate.

Sara Carter, Operations Manager

Sara, our operations manager, joined forces with Dr. Laurin to help build the awesome team we are today. Sara is passionate and competent when it comes to dental care; she was recognized as VIP Woman of the Year in 2016 by the National Association of Professional Women, as well as the recipient of Pinnacle Professional of the Year by Continental Who’s Who. She was recognized as 2017 Crown Council’s Team Member of The Year for her efforts in creating a culture of success and outstanding leadership of her team. Utilizing her dozen years of dental experience she’s created her own Innovative Coaching and Consulting business to help other offices reach our standard of care. Outside of dental care she enjoys horseback riding, coaching cheer, and spending time with her daughter and family at the cabin. Her passion is taking care of patients and her team and she will always go the extra mile to answer any questions you have from insurance to dental treatment.

Brook Zaporzan, Hygienist

Brook completed her Dental Assisting degree from UAA and started her dental career as a Certified Dental Assistant in 2003, she then saw a future in Dental Hygiene. In 2009 she completed her Hygiene Degree from UAA while in her 9th month of pregnancy! In 2013 Brook received a national award from the Crown Council for Dental Hygienist of the year. Her spirit and effect on her patients and team members is best described by an out of the office activity, she is an avid hockey fan and player. Brook enjoys playing women’s hockey and occasionally has to spend time in the penalty box for playing rough when it’s not allowed! She brings that same enthusiasm to the office every day. Brook is married to her husband Gregg and they have two children Camden and Jordyn. She is very passionate about Dentistry and her patients feel like they are part of her family, so much that she gives out hugs regularly.

Michan Ford, Dental Assistant

Michan is a national board certified dental assistant, graduating UAA in 2005. Very knowledgeable in all things dental,  she continued with the university as a coach for new dental students and is proficient in insurance and office management as well.  Patient comfort is her top priority and she does her best to make patients  feel relaxed during their dental visits. Michan and her family are highly active; camping, fishing, playing softball, 4 wheeling, anything to get dirty! Michan loves meeting new patients in particular and it’s her personal goal to make sure every patient has a positive experience and leaves the office with a smile.

Laura Gabriel, Dental Assistant

Laura has brightened our office with her smile and friendly personality for over a year. Laura has a dental assistant  for over 20 years and will be ready  to answer any questions you have about your dental treatment.  Growing up in big family on the Kenai Peninsula Laura loves the outdoors and all things Alaska including fishing, camping, and hiking. Laura enjoys educating patients about their dental health and will make sure each patient understands the “why” behind every diagnosis.

Olivia Rolfe, Dental Assistant

Olivia originally started with us back in 2016, after taking a break from the dental world to explore options at UAA she decided to come back and be part of the dental family here at Laurin Dental and Associates. While she spends a majority of her time behind the front desk doing scheduling coordination work, she does have experience and training as a dental assistant and you will see her helping wherever she is needed! Olivia enjoys being back with her patients and her team carrying on Dr. Laurin’s legacy. This is her second year playing softball with her fellow team member Michan and tries to explore Alaska as much as she can; kayaking, fishing, camping, snow sports and recently skydiving! Whether working at the front desk or assisting the doctor she will make it her mission to make it a pleasant dental experience from beginning to end.

Dr. Mark R Laurin, DDS

Dear Patients and friends,

We are incredibly saddened to share the news of Dr. Laurin’s passing with you. We understand how shocking this is to you; as it was to us. His passing was so unexpected and we are grateful for the support and questions. We have learned Dr. Laurin passed away while sleeping due to a lung condition on March 25th, 2017. Since Dr. Laurin was not one to worry and make a fuss over his personal health, none were aware of this condition.

It is our desire to carry on Mark’s passion for outstanding patient care. Our team is staying together and arrangements have been made for several of Mark’s colleagues and friends to continue working in the practice; taking care of you just as he would have.

Mark always operated his practice with open communication and we will do the same. As more permanent solutions come to fruition, we will readily share that information with you.

Our practice is open Monday through Thursday and we will remain consistent in providing you with the quality care Mark would have. We are ever so grateful you are remaining with us. It’s our desire to continue honoring Mark throughout the transition of care and ownership and are honored to have you alongside us.

Our goal is to carry on Mark’s legacy and to work together to provide you with continuity of care. Mark has built close relationships with many of you throughout the years and we hope you share in our desire for you to remain under our care.

With sadness & appreciation,

Sara Carter,

Operations Manager
